Evolution of the Automotive Components Industry

Corporate restructuring: Major vehicle manufacturers have reformed their supply systems around global production and sourcing. Purchasing has shifted from many individual suppliers to a smaller number of system suppliers, from individual parts to modules, and from domestic to global procurement. Component suppliers must strengthen system development, shorten development cycles and deliver better value, accelerating consolidation across the industry.

Integrated supply chains: Market concentration has increased as vehicle manufacturers adopt modular and system-based sourcing. Tier-one suppliers increasingly manage the entire chain, creating a more structured supplier hierarchy and closer collaboration. Strong suppliers now dominate much of the high-end market.

Technology development: Aerospace, aviation, electronics and information technologies are now widely used in automotive parts and assemblies. Safety, electronics, energy efficiency and environmental technologies extend from products to design, prototyping, production and management. Supplier R&D centres enable faster, more localized and innovative development while improving quality and reducing cost.

Globalization: To reduce cost and reach new markets, multinational component manufacturers continue to expand internationally. European suppliers invest overseas, North American suppliers expand in Europe, and Japanese manufacturers operate global production networks. Emerging Asian markets—and China in particular—remain a major focus of competition.
